By Chris Jeffrey
These constructions are created by painting narrow strips of wood in various colors and attaching them to painted artist boards. By protruding from the board the strips add a three dimensional element, creating kinetic art in which the viewer dramatically alters the appearance of the piece by changing his or her angle of view.
These pieces explore the interplay of color and shadow as well as the effects that are achieved when strong colors are placed on top of or next to each other. Often colors will appear lighter or darker depending on the colors that are nearby or will even appear as different colors entirely, an effect explored in depth by Joseph Albers.
